During the opening session of the 13th Habano Festival, the preliminary rounds of the tenth International Habanosommerlier Contest and the Alliance between Habanos and selected aged and extra-aged Cuban rums were held

Contesters from seven nations pitted against one another this Monday during the preliminary round of the tenth International Habanosommelier Contest that this year gathered representatives from Argentina, Cuba, Chile, Spain, UAE, Mexico and Russia.

Spain’s Jose Hidalgo, winner of the 1996 Habano Award and editor of the prestigious Epicur magazine –he’s acted as chairman of this contest’s jury since its foundation- underscored the quality of the contesters in this year’s edition.

“We’ve been able to see how much the level of today’s competitors has increased, the tremendous knowledge they have in terms of tobacco and especially in the field of Cuban cigars.”

Also during day one of this event, four rums –two aged and two extra-aged from renowned brands- walked off with the highest marks in the tough preliminary round of the so-called Habanos-Cuban Rums Alliance before a jury made up of experts from the two fields, as well as professional bartenders and sommeliers.

The winning aged and extra-aged rums from this preliminary round will compete in their respective categories this coming Thursday, but this time around for the final consideration of attendees, who will eventually handpick the finest combinations of all.
