A luxury humidor with a commemorative vitola was given as a present to Cuban music composer Chucho Valdes on his 70th birthday by the members of Habanos S.A. Board of Directors during a press conference in which different activities to celebrate the musician’s birthday were announced.
The tribute to the multi-Grammy winner will take place during the Festival of Chamber Music in Havana, organized by Cuban composer and orchestra conductor Leo Brouwer.
“Chucho is simply an Olympic champion as a musician, a composer and a person, that’s why he deserves this tribute and a whole lot more”, Brouwer said. He added that almost 50 years of “admiration and beautiful work” with the founded of popular band Irakere will be gratified and remembered in a special way with a concert slated next October 6 in the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Old Havana.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, during the concert a composition for piano and brass quintet entitled “La fiesta de la luz”, dedicated to Chucho Valdes, will be played. On the other hand, pianist Ernan Lopez Nussa and other musicians will play Chucho’s favorite pieces.
The commemorative vitola given to Chucho Valdes by Habanos S.A. has a special cigar band with the image of his face on it, featuring a beautiful humidor inside made of cedar and black mahogany with the shape of a piano as a tribute to the man who’s been an excellent performer of that particular musical instrument.
Chucho Valdes and Leo Brouwer performed in February this year at the gala concert during the opening of the 12th International Habano Festival at the Havana Grand Theater.
