The final competition of Habanosommelier Contest for United Kingdomtook place at Hunters & Frankau Limited offices, in London, on October 25.

Seven finalists from the main restaurants, hotels and clubs linked to Habanos, with outdoor areas to taste cigars, participated in the final competition.

The prize was a trip to Cuba, with all expenses covered, to representUnited Kingdomat theHabanosommelier International Contest, with the final stage to be carried out during the Habano Festival.

Although it was a hard-fought competition and every competitor had individual merits, after a tough day of evaluation the judges, Sean de Croley, Sales and Marketing Director for Hunters & Frankau, and Simon Chase, former marketing Directorfor H & F, unanimously decided to award the coveted prize to Peter Dobrontei (Hotel du Vin Harrogate).

His excellent result in the written test, along with the profound knowledge on Cuban cigars and the exemplary service of Habanos, determined the victory of Peter Dobrontei, a 31 year-old Hungarian, who has worked at the Hotel du Vin for several years and is the current manager of the bar at Harrogate hotel.

Dobrontei, who was in the second position of this contest last year, told the press that he was " delighted" with his victory and he is presently "looking to the future and will do his best to win the world crown."

The exam began with a rigorous written test that included a wide range of topics, including habanos, techniques to harvest Cuban tobacco, the production of cigars, vitolas (sizes), notes, tastes and service.

The second phase evaluated the knowledge on Habanos, their ability to recommend the correct cigars for specific occasions and their skill when it comes to cutting, lighting and serving the cigars they had recommended.

To do so, they followed specific situations designed by the jury and they counted on one humidor that contained eight different Habanos: Bolivar Royal Corona, Cohiba Siglo VI, Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto, H. Upmann N º 2, Partagas Short, Punch de Churchill, Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill and Vegas Robaina Familiar.

Finally, they had to cut, light the Habano and introduce it to the guests, as well as to recommend them the drink to pair with each of the chosen cigars.
