As usual, guests and attendees enjoyed the much-anticipated Habanosommelier International Contest, now in its 14th edition.

During the first stage, carried out on Monday, competitors faced a theoretical and demonstrative test where they boasted their knowledge on Habanos vitolas and different brands.

Out of the nine candidates –who previously won national contests organized at their respective countries– only three reached the finals, scheduled for Friday, February 27. The names are:

-Walter Saens Rodriguez Neto, from Brazil, who suggested pairing Marc da Borgogne, from Domaine de La Roma Warehouse, and Partagás Series Epicure No. 2.

-Lucas Tramontana, from the United Kingdom, came up with the Hennessy XO and 2012 Cohiba Siglo VI.

-Cuba’s Andrés Piñón decided to combine Havana Club’s Ron Unión and Cohiba Siglo VI.

This contest is gaining momentum at a time when an increasingly number of enthusiasts is asking for the professional advice of a sommelier when it comes to handpicking a Habano.

On Friday, the three final contestants will be put through their paces with a practical test of Habano cutting and lighting, descriptive tasting sessions and pairing with different drinks.
