The closing day of Saborear lo Cubano’s sixth edition, one of the most important gastronomic events in Cuba, brought the limelight on an exclusive pairing between Cohiba Espléndido and Havana Club’s Unión rum. The event was presided over by Fernando Fernandez, habanosommelier and consultant of Habanos and Havana Club.

The workshop-tasting session, held at the Museum of Rum, gathered dozens of connoisseurs and enthusiasts of the best premium cigars in the world.

“Habaguanex has planned a well-organized event, based on the elements that characterize the Cuban culture, where cigars and rum play major roles. Cohiba is now 50 years old and is a valuable element of the Habano vitolas. Along with Espléndido, today we’ll puff on the last but one member of Havana Club’s Iconic Collection: Unión Rum”, the specialist announced.

“We’re going to witness a magical moment. We’ll truly feel the Cuban taste. We’re talking about both a special habano and one of the finest rums ever distilled. These are two guiding threads in Cuba’s culture. We owe it all to the Cuban master rum makers and cigar rollers.

“This time around, we’ll smoke the most spectacular Juliet in the Habanos universe: Cohiba, the Espléndido that stands out in the classic line, launched as far back as 1982 and internationally described as a gem. A habano with extraordinary grace and character, the result of centennial traditions,” he went on to explain.

As for Unión Rum, attendees tasted two of its cask bases before having a chance to wallow in the end product, which they agreed it greatly pairs with the Cohiba Espléndido.

“We’re in the presence of two products that were created over a hundred years ago: Cuban rum and cigars, and that’s really something to be enjoyed and honored,” he said.

Mr. Fernandez led the tasting session, talked about the history of Cuban rum and tobacco and explained their key features.

Saborear lo cubano dedicated a significant part of this year’s edition to Asian cuisine, its influence in Cuba’s culinary culture and its impact on the ongoing international gastronomic scenario.
