Cuba Wins Habanosommelier Contest

Cuba’s Pedro, from the emblematic La Bodeguita del Medio, walked away with top honors at the 2013 Habanosommelier Contest, during a tough competition in which Venezuela’s Jose Gregorio Pereira came out as runner-up and Great Britain’s Peter Dobrontei finished third.

Curiously, Pedro Tejeda is the husband of former world habanosommelier champion Zudlay Napoles, one of the first women to win that title for her profound knowledge about Habanos and her skills for a service that includes suggesting patrons the right cigar for the right drink.

This tough competition –it’s increasingly adding devotees with each passing year- is first held among Habano distributors worldwide that later on handpick their representatives for the grand finale within the framework of the Habano Festival.

This time around, participants of the 2013 Habanosommelier Contest was Pedro Tejeda, from the famous La Bodeguita del Medio, who awed the jury with his pairing proposal of Cuban-made sour chocolate, a 15-year Legendario rum and a Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills.

The other contesters were Venezuela’s Jose Gregorio Pereira; Great Britain’s Peter Dobrontei, Spain’s Francisco Javier Marin, Italy’s Marco Tonelli, France’s Fabrice Sommier, Dejan Gjorgjiev from the UAE and Russia’s Dmitry Drutsa.
