Habanos in Images Photography Contest Called


The International Contest “Habanos in Images” includes a unique category that is going to award the works that better reflect everything related to the habano world, tobacco agriculture, habanos making process and ways of life linked to its consumption.

The works on agriculture aspects and/or the industrial phase of habanos production must have been taken in Cuba.

There are no restrictions in terms of the date when the pictures were taken.


All photographers, professionals or amateurs, born in every corner of Earth, are allowed to participate.

Photographers less than 18 years old can also participate, but if their works are handpicked, they must present an authorization document signed by their parents or guardians.

Not allowed: works of deceased artists presented by third persons; works of jury members or workers of Habanos SA, or their relatives up to a third degree of relationship. Works produced by more than one author are accepted.


Presentation of works: The works are to be presented between the release date of this call and January 30, 2013.

Acceptance notification: February 5, 2013.

Prizes notification: During the closing ceremony of the Festival

Exhibition of Works: February 26, 2013 –March 2, 2013. Havana Convention Center, Cuba

The works sent after the presentation deadline won’t be taken in, according to the scheduled established by this rules.


HABANOS S.A. calls for the First edition of its 2013 Habanos in Images Photography Prize. Its objective is contributing to spreading tobacco culture and its harvest process, making and consumption.


1. This RULES will be valid for this call, the selection of works and judgment, organization and operation of the First edition of 2013 Habanos in Images Photography Prize, organized by HABANOS S.A.


The works must be sent in digital format through the emailcphoto59@ymail.com.


The jury’s decisions are not to be objected and are unappealable.


The Juryis going to award the following prizes:  

  • GrandPrize
  • 1º Prize
  • 2º Prize
  • 3º Prize

The Jurycan also give additional honorable mentions (with diplomas) in the positions above mentioned if there are works with enough merits.

Prizes have to be awarded.

Previously mentioned prizes will be eventually joined by those handed by companies, institutions or public/private organisms.


The awarded works will automatically become part of Habanos S.A.’s assets, which can be used by stating the author’s name.

To the record, all competitors, upon participating in the contest, accept these Rules and Bases and declare that the works they send belong to them and have their exclusivity copyright.

The contestants authorize the reproduction of their pictures in terms of marketing and the promotion of this event, as well as the resulting exhibitions, catalogues, posters, banners, cards, publications and Internet presence.

The use is authorized for over two years after the announcement of the selection and prizes, and that doesn’t entail any payment to the photographer or the people that appear on the pictures. The photographers will receive credit in each publication and authorize HABANOS S.A. to sub-license the chosen pictures to the press, so they can be displayed within the context of the competition and its exhibitions.

The Organizing Committee has the right to reject and remove any picture that might contain defamatory, obscene or pornographic images, or might be considered a criminal offense or violate any Cuban law.

If there is any case that not described on these Rules, it will be solved by the Organizing Committee.


In order to be included in the first edition of 2013 Habanos in Images Photography Prize, organized by Habanos SA, the pictures must feature the following technical specifications:

Only digital images are accepted, which means, images taken with a digital camera or scanned from the negative or paper.

  1. Digital pictures must be JPEG files; resolution 300 dpi, below 20 Megabytes.
  2. The authors can personally deliver their works on CD or USB pen drives at Habanos SA’s offices by contacting Ricardo Salas or any other member of the Organizing Committee, within the established deliver period and featuring the technical requirements.
  3. The file’s name can have up to 25 characters, with counting .jpg, and symbols such as #, $, &, periods or any special letter cannot be included: underscores are allowed (_ -). The file’s name can only have one period, right before the extension jpg (.jpg).
  4. The file’s name must have the following structure: Surname_Initial letter of the first name _title of the work.jpg (for instance: Rodriguez_P_La vega.jpg) The Jury won’t have access to the author’s name, but to the work’s title.
  5. The photographers must identity their work or works with a TITLE. "Un-titled" works are not accepted because of the inconvenience to file and catalogue. Each work must be complemented by a description or written text, a paragraph with less than 100 words or 550 letters, including precise information on the photographed people or places and context: for example: country, province or region, city or town, names of the characters and any other concrete piece of information.
  6. The record of personal data will be requested during the registration, before electronically sending the digital files, and will be kept in a data base. The data to be sent for the registration is:

Such information will receive confidential treatment. Email addresses or any other personal data can only be used to contact the competitorsand won’t be transferred to third parties without explicit authorization by the author.

The registration application, as well as the personal data of creators including the title of the work, will be reported to the 15th Habano Festival’s Organizing Committee to rsalas@habanos.cuwriting Habanos en Imagenes 2013.
