Habanos & Rioja: A Perfect Alliance

28/02/2013

The alliance between wine No. 2, a 2008 Reserve Red from the Beronia Bodegas, and wine No. 4 –a 2007 Reserve Red from Dominio de Campo Viejo Bodegas, both from Spain- and the H. Upmann No. 2 and the Montecristo No. 2 Habanos, respectively, grabbed top honors among participants of the grand finale of the Habanos-Rioja Alliance held within the framework of the 15th Habano Festival.

Considered the largest event of its kind ever held in Cuba, with a turnout of 850 delegates, including sommeliers, cigar experts, tasters, ethnologists, executives, gastronomes, winemakers and pastry cooks, among others, the encounter between Habanos and Rioja wines (denomination of origin) stirred tremendous interest since the preliminary round, a contest that took place last Tuesday in one of the halls of the Intl. Conference Center in Havana.

According to Victor Pascual, chairman of the Rioja Qualified Denomination of Origin Regulatory Council, this experience or marriage between two top-of-the-line products should come around. He also expressed confidence in the Cuban market, saying that an event like this could serve as a launching pad for both Habanos and Rioja wines to get a hold on other markets, such as China, Europe and the U.S., where both companies pursue common goals.

From now on, he stressed, this will be a perfect match, a perfect alliance that will hopefully live on for many years to come.

According to attendees, the harmony generated unexpected quality given the presence of such an assortment of vintage wines with delicious bouquets, as well as the peerless properties of the participating Habanos.

As she wrapped up the activity, Habanos S.A. Market Operations chief Ana Lopez thanked Victor Pascual for the love and passion he poured into this alliance from the opening stage in Spain, for suggesting such an array of delicious and interesting wines, and for collaborating with Habanos S.A. for the Festival’s success.
