A Unique Colonial Village Gives Credit to the Trinidad Brand

A colonial city touched by the magic wand of eternity, dazzling for its untainted distinction nearly five centuries after its foundation, shrouds with its larger-than-life legend the Trinidad habano brand.

Perched on central-southern Cuba, in the province of Sancti Spiritus, with the evergreen Escambray Sierra as a backdrop and overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Trinidad resembles a picture-perfect scenario designed with each and every detail in mind for the shooting of a movie on the golden age of Spain’s colonial rule.

Anyone gets awed as the road suddenly leads to that colorful image of cobblestoned streets, majestic mansions decked out by doors and windows made of precious wood, protected by a whimsical mesh of wrought-iron gates, houses that verge on a square hedged with shadowy trees and flower gardens thoroughly trimmed.

It’s actually amazing to find out that the Village of the Holy Trinity (Trinidad) was the third city founded by Spanish head conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar back in 1514, in the company of legendary Fray Bartolome de las Casas, who eventually officiated the first mass on the same spot where the Jose Marti Park stands today, built to pay tribute to Cuba’s independence apostle.

Delicate and patient conservation and restoration efforts that started in 1959 by a group of experts, supported by an enthusiastic population that loves its city, have helped to make Trinidad one of the Americas’ best-preserved colonial cities, a genuine living museum that rocks with the creative energy of its people and welcomes countless visitors with astounding hospitality.

Next to the nearby Valley of the Sugar Mills, Trinidad entered the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1988, a well-deserved recognition for its undeniable values that have been cherished with that same spirit of distinction that spruces up the Trinidad habano brand.

That same fusion of the Hispanic and the African that overwhelms the senses with the most pleasant emotions in this cultivated colonial village, has tricked out these habanos with its legend since 1969 in limited quantities that were solely used as State gifts for foreign dignitaries and high-ranking officials.

Only from 1998 on, the Trinidad brand was brought before cigar smokers from around the world, backed up by the identity of a historic, artistic and cultural wealth the colonial village of Trinidad has to offer, a city that goads visitors into taking strolls on foot and stopping by every nook and cranny, a city that boasts traditional celebrations, religious observances, unforgettable moments, like those that come along when someone puffs on one of those habanos that have been named after the village.

The Main Square of the renowned city exhibits a statue of Terpsichore –the Greek muse of dancing and choral song- that stands up to par with the awesome beauty of the Church of the Holy Trinity, a safe haven for priceless pieces of the island nation’s religious treasure, like the Vera Cruz Christ and the altar anointed to the Virgin of Mercy, the only one of its kind in the country.

Half a dozen miles from the village lie the soft sands of Ancon Beach, home to balmy and calm waters bathed by the Caribbean Sea, the ideal complement for those who combine the enjoyment of history and the charms of nature.

There’s no doubt that the brand handpicked by those who want to make a difference matches with the elegance of its wrapper and its one-and-only aroma with the peerless city that lent its name and is worshipped all over the globe.
